Foundations led by actor Leonardo DiCaprio and entrepreneur Jeff Bezos have announced a historic $200 million conservation initiative aimed at helping save 100 of the world’s most critically endangered species. Known as the Phoenix Species Project, organizers say it is the largest single philanthropic fund ever dedicated exclusively to recovering species on the brink of extinction. The effort will support conservation work in approximately 30 countries and focus on restoring habitats, protecting wildlife, and partnering with local communities.
The fund is led by DiCaprio’s conservation organization Re:wild and the Bezos Earth Fund, with half of the $200 million, $100 million, coming from the Bezos Earth Fund and the other $100 million backed by Re:wild, DiCaprio himself, and partner organizations including Age of Union and the Todd Graves Family Foundation.
“The Phoenix Species Project has the potential to drastically shift how we approach conservation and combat the climate crisis at a global scale,” DiCaprio said in a statement announcing the initiative. Lauren Sánchez Bezos, vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, framed the effort around future generations: “One hundred species, thirty countries and a real commitment to bringing them back. Not managing their decline. Recovering them. That’s the whole difference.”
For Christians, the announcement serves as a reminder that the earth ultimately belongs to the Lord and that humanity has been entrusted with caring for His creation. From the very beginning, God gave mankind the responsibility to steward the world He made.

The project will focus on species ranging from lemurs and pangolins to rare salamanders, tortoises, and other vulnerable animals whose populations have declined because of habitat loss, climate pressures, disease, and other threats. Organizers say the funding will support long-term recovery efforts rather than short-term conservation projects, moving beyond the smaller grant cycles that have historically limited what conservationists could accomplish.
Scripture teaches that God’s care extends beyond humanity to every living creature. Jesus Himself reminded His followers that not even a sparrow escapes the Father’s notice.

While the initiative has drawn attention because of the high-profile names behind it, Christians recognize that caring for creation is not about elevating human achievement but about honoring the Creator. The Bible calls believers to exercise wise stewardship over the earth while remembering that God’s glory, not man’s, is the ultimate purpose.

Throughout Scripture, creation is portrayed as a testimony to God’s greatness. The beauty and diversity of the natural world point people toward the wisdom and power of the One who made heaven and earth. Protecting wildlife and preserving ecosystems can reflect respect for God’s handiwork, though Christians understand that true hope for creation rests not in human efforts alone but in God’s eternal plan.

The Bible also teaches that creation itself longs for the day when Christ will fully restore all things. While conservation efforts may help preserve God’s creation in the present, believers place their confidence in the coming Kingdom, when the curse of sin will finally be removed and all creation will experience complete renewal.

As the Phoenix Species Project begins its work, Christians can celebrate every effort that reflects responsible stewardship while remembering that lasting restoration comes through the Lord. The same God who created every creature is faithful to sustain His world, and one day He will make all things new.
