Small Beginnings

I used to discount anything that started small, as if it wasn’t the “real” version of what God was building, just a rough draft before the actual thing showed up. Then I read Zechariah’s question: who despises the day of small things?

“For who has despised the day of small things?”
Zechariah 4:10

“The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants.”
Matthew 13:31-32

“And though your beginning was small, your latter days will be very great.”
Job 8:7

Small Beginnings

Read: Zechariah 4:10, Matthew 13:31-32, Job 8:7

I used to discount anything that started small, as if it wasn't the "real" version of what God was building, just a rough draft before the actual thing showed up. Then I read Zechariah's question: who despises the day of small things?

A tiny, unimpressive start isn't a lesser version of the plan. It's the plan, exactly at the stage it's supposed to be at. Oaks don't apologize for once being acorns. Whatever God is building in you right now doesn't need to be measured against someone else's finished version.

Study It

Zechariah 4:10 uses language of "despising" small beginnings, implying it's a temptation, not just an observation. The verse assumes you'll be tempted to dismiss the small start. It commands you not to.

Prayer

“Father, help me stop despising small beginnings. Thank You for building things slowly and on purpose. Grow patience in me for the process. Amen.”

Ask Yourself

What small beginning in your life have you been tempted to write off instead of trusting God with?
