“And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy.”
Genesis 2:2-3
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor... but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God.”
Exodus 20:8-11
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me... and you will find rest for your souls.”
Matthew 11:28-29
Rest Is Not Weakness
Read: Genesis 2:2-3, Exodus 20:8-11, Matthew 11:28-29
For a long time I wore exhaustion like proof of my devotion, figuring that if I wasn't running on empty I probably wasn't working hard enough for God. But even God rested after creation, and not because He was tired. Rest was built into the rhythm from the very beginning.
Rest was never just the reward you collect after you've earned it, or the thing you collapse into when you finally break. It's a command, given in the same breath as the instructions to work. Ignoring it isn't extra dedication. It's disobedience wearing the costume of diligence.
Study It
The Hebrew shabbat means "to cease" or "stop." It isn't primarily about physical recovery, but a deliberate halt that trusts the world will keep turning without your constant effort holding it up.
Prayer
“God, forgive me for treating exhaustion like a badge of honor. Teach me that rest is obedience, not laziness. Amen.”
Ask Yourself
What would it look like for you to treat rest as a command instead of a reward you have to earn?
