Most love we experience growing up gets earned in some fashion — good behavior rewarded, achievement noticed, compliance smiled upon. It’s easy to unconsciously import that framework into how we assume God’s love works, expecting we have to get presentable first before it’s fully extended.
Paul flips the timeline entirely. While we were still sinners — not after we cleaned up, not once we’d made enough progress — Christ died for us. That timeline is the whole gospel in miniature. Love came first. The mess was still fully in progress when it arrived. If you’ve been operating like God’s love toward you is contingent on hitting some invisible threshold of improvement, this verse says otherwise, plainly. The worst version of you already qualified for it. Today doesn’t have to be the day you finally get good enough. It can just be the day you receive what was already given while you weren’t.
