I spent years believing God’s love was something I had to qualify for. Like I needed to hit a standard of good behavior before He’d extend genuine affection my way. Most of the love we experience growing up gets earned in some fashion — good grades get praised, obedience gets rewarded, performance gets noticed. It’s easy to quietly drag that same math into our faith and assume God operates on the exact same system.
I remember a season where I felt like an absolute mess, waiting to get my act together before I prayed again. I thought I had to clean up the wreckage before coming into the room. But grace doesn’t wait for you to get presentable. God flipped the timeline completely: while we were still deep in the middle of our worst mistakes, Christ chose us. The mess was still actively happening when love showed up. You don’t have to spend today trying to become good enough. You just have to receive what was already given while you weren’t.
In Romans 5:8, Paul uses the word “demonstrates” in the present tense. God’s love isn’t a historical event He regrets or a contract He’s looking to break. The timeline of the gospel means love came first, before any behavioral progress was made. The worst version of you already qualified for His mercy.
“Father, thank You for loving me while I was still in the middle of my mess, not after I cleaned it up. Help me stop trying to earn something You’ve already freely given, and teach me to rest in Your grace today. Amen.”
