A father, desperate for his son, says something remarkably honest to Jesus: I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief. He doesn’t pretend his faith is complete. He doesn’t wait until it is to ask for help. He brings the faith he actually has, mixed in with the doubt he actually has, and hands both to Jesus in the same breath.
That’s probably closer to most of our faith than the polished version we perform on Sunday mornings. Real faith and real doubt often sit in the same sentence, and scripture doesn’t ask us to sort them out privately before we’re allowed to approach God. Bring both today, honestly, the way that father did. He didn’t need perfect faith to get his son healed. He just needed to bring what he had and ask for the rest.
