We live in a world that sells joy as a byproduct of external circumstances. We tell ourselves that as soon as the job settles down, the relationship stabilizes, the bank account looks better, or the weekend arrives, we’ll finally feel at peace. But chasing joy through circumstances is like chasing the horizon — it keeps moving every time you get close.
The psalmist points out that joy actually has a fixed address: God’s presence. Fullness of joy isn’t found in having a week where everything goes right. It’s found in drawing near to the One who stays steady when everything goes wrong. When you stop hunting for joy in achievements, approval, or easy circumstances, you’re free to step into His presence and let joy show up naturally as a result.
Psalm 16 uses the phrase “fullness of joy”. The Hebrew concept implies satisfaction to the point of overflowing, something external achievements can mimic temporarily but never sustain. Joy in Scripture is anchored in a Person, not an outcome.
“Lord, forgive me for hunting for joy in places that were never meant to satisfy me. Remind me today that true peace is found in Your presence, not in my circumstances going smoothly. Amen.”
