I used to think faith meant having zero doubts, zero questions, and a completely calm mind at all times. I thought if I admitted I was struggling to believe something, God would step back until I got my head straight. So I played the part, saying the right phrases on Sunday while carrying heavy questions on Monday.
There’s a father in the Gospels who brought his sick son to Jesus and said something wildly honest: I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief! He didn’t pretend to have a perfect, polished faith. He didn’t wait until his doubts were solved before approaching Christ. He brought his belief and his uncertainty in the exact same sentence, and Jesus met him right there. You don’t need flawless confidence to draw near to God; you just need to bring whatever faith you have and let Him handle the rest.
Jesus never rebuked the father for his mixed confession in Mark 9. Scripture reveals that God doesn’t demand pre-sorted perfection before we come into His presence. Real faith isn’t the absence of doubt; it’s bringing your doubt to Jesus instead of walking away with it.
“Lord, I do believe — help my unbelief. Thank You that I don’t have to have everything figured out to come to You. Meet me in the middle of my questions and grow my trust today. Amen.”
