Bought Back, Not Just Forgiven

“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.”

— Ephesians 1:7 (NIV)

Forgiveness and redemption get used like synonyms, but they’re not quite the same transaction. Forgiveness cancels a debt. Redemption buys something back that had been sold, lost, or taken, it restores actual ownership, not just erases what was owed.

Paul doesn’t describe forgiveness and redemption as two separate gifts. He says the redemption comes “through his blood,” and forgiveness is the receipt of it, “in accordance with the riches of his grace.” You weren’t only let off the hook. You were bought back. That distinction matters on the days shame convinces you that being forgiven still leaves you second-hand somehow, used, marked, permanently discounted by whatever you’re forgiven for. Redemption says otherwise. The purchase price wasn’t a markdown for damaged goods. It was the full price for something God considered worth buying back entirely. Today, whatever you’re carrying, you’re not just off the hook. You’ve been repurchased, fully, on purpose.

Today’s Thought

Do you live like someone who was fully bought back, or like someone who’s merely been let off the hook?

Today’s Prayer

“Jesus, thank You for redeeming me at the full price of Your blood. Help me stop living like discounted goods and start living like I was bought back on purpose.”
