Renewed Mind

I assumed for years that transformation was mostly about willpower, gritting through temptation until good behavior finally stuck. But Paul doesn’t tell us to try harder to act differently. He tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our mind.

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Romans 12:2

“Put off your old self... and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”
Ephesians 4:22-24

“We take every thought captive to obey Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:5

Renewed Mind

Read: Romans 12:2, Ephesians 4:22-24, 2 Corinthians 10:5

I assumed for years that transformation was mostly about willpower, gritting through temptation until good behavior finally stuck. But Paul doesn't tell us to try harder to act differently. He tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our mind.

Behavior was never the starting point. Thinking is. What you actually believe about God, about yourself, about what's true, that's the soil everything else grows out of. You can white-knuckle your way through a season, but it won't last while your thinking stays exactly the same.

Study It

The Greek metamorphoo behind "transformed" in Romans 12:2 is the same root as "metamorphosis," a change from the inside that reshapes the outside, not a costume layered over the same old thinking.

Prayer

“Lord, don't just change my behavior, renew my mind. Let what I actually believe about You reshape how I live. Amen.”

Ask Yourself

What belief about yourself or about God needs to be renewed before your behavior can genuinely change?
