As a deadly Ebola outbreak spreads through the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Christian leaders are calling believers to prayer and compassion. Here is what is happening and how to respond in faith.

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has prompted concern among global health officials and renewed calls from Christian leaders for prayer, compassion, and support for those affected by the crisis.
Since the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency in mid-May, more than a thousand confirmed infections and hundreds of deaths have been reported across the region. The outbreak is linked to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a rare form of the virus that has caused only a small number of known outbreaks since it was first identified in Uganda in 2007.
Health experts have expressed concern about the rapid spread of the disease in a region already struggling with armed conflict, displacement, and limited medical resources. The outbreak is occurring in a heavily populated mining area where people frequently travel between communities, increasing the challenge of containing the virus.
“Ebola outbreaks are always serious, but the conditions in eastern Congo make this situation particularly concerning,” health officials said as international teams continue working to track cases and provide care.
This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since the virus was first identified in 1976, and it began just months after the previous outbreak ended.
Ebola is spread through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person. It can also spread through contaminated surfaces and during the handling of victims who have died from the disease. Symptoms often begin with fever, headache, fatigue, sore throat, and muscle aches before progressing to more severe complications.
Medical experts note that there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment specifically designed for the Bundibugyo strain. Researchers are studying potential vaccine candidates, but none are yet ready for widespread use.

The outbreak has also sparked international discussion after U.S. officials proposed sending Americans exposed to Ebola to a quarantine facility in Kenya. The plan has faced legal challenges and protests within Kenya, highlighting the difficult decisions governments face during public health emergencies.
For Christians, the crisis serves as a reminder of the biblical call to care for those who suffer. Throughout Scripture, believers are encouraged to show mercy to the sick, support those in need, and pray faithfully during times of hardship.
The Apostle Paul wrote, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). Churches and Christian relief organizations have long played important roles during disease outbreaks by providing medical care, humanitarian assistance, and spiritual encouragement.
Many Christian ministries are asking believers worldwide to pray for those battling illness, for families grieving loved ones, and for doctors, nurses, and aid workers serving on the front lines. Prayer is also being requested for government leaders and health officials as they seek wisdom in responding to the outbreak.
The current emergency brings back memories of the devastating West African Ebola epidemic of 2014, which claimed more than 11,000 lives. While medical knowledge and response systems have improved since then, experts stress that vigilance and cooperation remain essential.
In the midst of fear and uncertainty, Christians are reminded that God remains faithful. While the outbreak presents serious challenges, believers are called to respond not with panic but with compassion, courage, and hope rooted in Christ.
As churches around the world lift up the people of Congo in prayer, many are also looking for ways to support humanitarian efforts that bring practical help and the love of Christ to communities facing this difficult trial.
