The Weight Of Approval

or a long time I made decisions off a mental scoreboard, tracking who would be impressed and who would be disappointed. I never called it people-pleasing. I called it being considerate. But underneath it was a quiet exhaustion from trying to manage everyone’s opinion of me at once.

“For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
Galatians 1:10

“How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?”
John 5:44

The Weight Of Approval

Read: Galatians 1:10, John 5:44, Proverbs 29:25

For a long time I made decisions off a mental scoreboard, tracking who would be impressed and who would be disappointed. I never called it people-pleasing. I called it being considerate. But underneath it was a quiet exhaustion from trying to manage everyone's opinion of me at once.

Paul asks a pointed question: if he were still trying to please people, would he even be serving Christ? You can't carry the weight of universal approval and walk in genuine freedom at the same time. At some point you have to set one of them down.

Study It

The Greek aresko ("please") in Galatians 1:10 is contrasted directly with doulos, "servant" or "slave." Paul frames people-pleasing and Christ-serving as two competing masters. You can't fully answer to both.

Prayer

“God, free me from the exhausting math of managing everyone's approval. Let Your opinion of me be the only one I'm chasing. Amen.”

Ask Yourself

Whose approval have you been quietly performing for that you need to release today?
