Paul asks a pointed question: if he were still trying to please people, would he even be serving Christ? You can't carry the weight of universal approval and walk in genuine freedom at the same time. At some point you have to set one of them down.
The Greek aresko ("please") in Galatians 1:10 is contrasted directly with doulos, "servant" or "slave." Paul frames people-pleasing and Christ-serving as two competing masters. You can't fully answer to both.
